Travel money · a shared ledger

Trip expense splitter

Add who paid and who shared each cost. Check everyone's balance, then copy a settlement summary. Split actual trip expenses in one currency, with refunds and completed repayments kept in the same ledger.

1. Your travel group

2–8 travellers

Use one currency throughout this ledger. No currency conversion.

2. Add a paid expense

Who shared this expense?

Select only the people who used it. The payer can be left out.

Add a refund

Link a partial or full refund to the original expense. Choose whoever actually received the money.

Record a completed repayment

Record money already sent between travellers. A suggested repayment is not marked as completed automatically.

    3. Check each balance

All amounts use the selected ledger currency.

Repaid net = completed repayments sent minus received. Balance = paid less refunds − share + repaid net. “Gets” means others still owe you; “Owes” means you still need to pay.

    Suggested repayments

One way to settle the current balances. Check your records before sending money, then record any payment you complete above.

Names, amounts and records stay in your browser. This tool does not send ledger data anywhere. Browser storage can be cleared by your device; export a copy for safekeeping.

      How the split works

Each expense is shared equally by the selected people, even when someone else paid. The calculator uses whole currency units for JPY and KRW, two decimal places for most supported currencies, and three for KWD. Any leftover smallest units go to the selected travellers in their listed order.

A refund reduces the original expense's remaining cost, which is then split again among its original participants. This keeps the rounding consistent and makes a full refund remove that expense's entire share. The person who receives the refund has that amount deducted from their paid total. Completed repayments stay as separate records, so a refund after settlement can create a new balance.

      A checked three-friend example

Alex pays $300 for a hotel shared by all three friends. Blair pays $90 for dinner with Casey. Casey pays $60 for transport shared by all three. Alex then receives a $60 hotel refund.

After the refund, Alex has paid $240 and owes a $100 share; Blair has paid $90 and owes a $145 share; Casey has paid $60 and owes a $145 share. Blair pays Alex $55 and Casey pays Alex $85. Load the example above to inspect every record.

Actual spending, not a trip budget

This trip expense calculator answers who owes whom for money already spent. It does not estimate the cost of a future trip, calculate fuel use, convert currencies, or split accommodation by different numbers of nights. Use one ledger currency and the amounts you actually paid. For the full walkthrough, read how to split travel expenses with friends, including refunds after everyone has settled.
